The choir said their goodbyes to Benjamin at a zoom on Monday night and a small group made a special recording of one of Benjamin’s favorite hymns, All My Hope on God is Founded, to play for him as a treat that evening. According to Wikipedia, the German text of this hymn was given to Herbert Howells one morning, while eating breakfast, “sausage and bacon”, and he promptly wrote out this hymn for the Charter house school. It is in our hymnal at #655 and is shown below.

Scott accompanied this hymn with an original harmonization on the last verse on his digital keyboard, and Phred Mileski ( who wrote the descant), Gerri Smith, Nancy Lewandowski, and Chris Woodside sang the verses. We are very pleased to be able to offer this as our recording this week and thank those who participated for all their extra efforts. As always, we invite all who have any interest in singing or helping with recordings to join us. The whole choir sends love and best wishes to Benjamin as he leaves for Providence and begins at St. Stephens.

1 . All my hope on God is founded;
he doth still my trust renew,
me through change and chance he guideth,
only good and only true.
God unknown, he alone
calls my heart to be his own.

2 . Mortal pride and earthly glory,
sword and crown betray our trust;
though with care and toil we build them,
tower and temple fall to dust.
But God’s power, hour by hour,
is my temple and my tower.

3. God’s great goodness e’er endureth,
deep his wisdom, passing thought:
splendor, light and life attend him,
beauty springeth out of naught.
Evermore from his store
newborn worlds rise and adore.

4. Daily doth the almighty Giver
bounteous gifts on us bestow;
his desire our soul delighteth,
pleasure leads us where we go.
Love doth stand at his hand;
joy doth wait on his command.

5. Still from earth to God eternal
sacrifice of praise be done,
high above all praises praising
for the gift of Christ, his Son.
Christ doth call one and all:
ye who follow shall not fall.

    Thank you to all choir involved in this lovely hymn. And thank you Benjamin for bringing us so much during your time here at St. John’s, including your love in music.
