Chantal Hovendick, a clarinetist with the Coast Guard, suggested this week’s music offering, Meditation, from Four Short Pieces by Frank Bridge (arranged by Rainford).

Frank Bridge (2/26/1879-1/10/1941) was a British composer, violist, and conductor who died 80 years ago this week. He was the teacher of Benjamin Britten. Bridge, a pacifist, was deeply disturbed by WWI and wrote many pastoral pieces, laments, and prayers. This Meditation, which has been transcribed for clarinet, originally for violin, has that lovely pastoral quality.

The Coast Guard typically plays for the inauguration in Washington D.C., but this year they are working from home base. We are so pleased to have Chantal play for us and thank her for this beautiful, peaceful offering. I accompanied on the piano, and Reade James combined our recordings for you.
