The text of Nearer, My God, to Thee, written in 1841 by Sarah Adams in Essex England, tells Jacob’s dream ( Genesis 28: 11-12). It became famous as the last hymn played by the band on the sinking Titanic in 1912. However, there are differing accounts of this. It’s also known as the final hymn played for the sinking ship, Valencia, in 1906. It has been played on many TV series, in movies, recorded by numerous singers, and played at a few presidents’ funerals. Although there are different tunes associated with these words, in the 1940 hymnal, we have it set to Bethany by Lowell Mason (1856).

(This hymn does not appear in the 1982 hymnal.) We thank Paul Loether, guitarist, who has been kind enough to record for us again this week. It is a treat to have this old favorite hymn, and we hope you enjoy it.
