Mozambique Ministry Update: New Relationships, New Leadership

In 2018, St. John’s and our friends in the Anglican Diocese of Lebombo embarked on a re-visioning process of our relationship with each other. This process was sparked by a change in our leadership here at St. John’s and by changes in the episcopal leadership in the Lebombo diocese. Through prayer and conversations, we discerned that God was inviting us to sponsor José Amaral, a seminarian, for the remainder of his studies and for two or three years past his ordination. We also discerned that God was inviting us into a relationship with St. Bernard Mizeki Anglican Church and its priest, Fr. David Geraldo. This congregation is located on the outskirts of Maputo which is Mozambique’s capital. The majority of the funds for 2018 designated for Mozambique will be used to further projects with these new partnerships.

Fr. Jonathan Folts, Anne Littlefield, and Tony Custodio went to Mozambique in the latter part of October 2018 to share in the 125th-anniversary celebration of the diocese. As part of that trip, they met José and Fr. David, along with other friends of St. John’s that we have made along the way during these many years! In addition to the money used for the partnerships, we also presented Bishop Carlos Matsinhe with a gift to honor their 125th anniversary. This gift has been used to help fund a special project of his, namely the creation of a booklet to educate children and teenagers about the stewardship of creation and the environment. Do please continue to keep our friends in your prayers!
