THE SAINT JOHN’S BIBLE

The Saint John’s Bible began in the imagination of thirteen-year-old Donald Jackson, a young man who had a passion for calligraphy. His vision was realized with the commissioning of The Saint John’s Bible by St. John’s University. The project started on Ash Wednesday 2000 and completed in June 2011. Though traditional in execution, this Bible reflects the modern era in which it was created.

The Saint John’s Bible is a metaphorical work that invites questions and allows space for the individual to find the answers within. The font, designed by Jackson to be legible and elegant, invites one to read it aloud to a group and to discuss what that means to you, today. The illuminations are also designed to be the focus of group discussion or can be used as a visual meditation to find a deeper connection with God. In its scope, artistry, imagination and execution The Saint John’s Bible is unparalleled.

How can one engage with The Saint John’s Bible?

We are excited to offer parishioners and the wider community multiple ways to explore The Saint John’s Bible:

Every Tuesday morning, from 10:00-11:00 AM, join us in the Parish Hall for Bible Study. During this time, we examine thoroughly one of the illuminations contained in The Saint John’s Bible. Not only will participants immerse themselves in the beauty of the illumination but also, will deepen their understanding of its Biblical context.

During all of our services, The Saint John’s Bible features prominently. The Gospel is proclaimed directly from its text, and the Gospel & Acts Volume is open and available for viewing.

One Saturday per month, we welcome you to join us between 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall for a Visio Divina session centered around The Saint John’s Bible. Dive into moments of reflection, artistic inspiration, and learning as you engage with the captivating illuminations and calligraphy. This gathering is inclusive and open to all, offering a flexible environment where you can drop in at any point during the workshop to immerse yourself in the experience, whether it’s for a brief moment or the entirety of the session.
