Deacon Geof and Mr. Don Perrault, Social Studies Department Chair at Valley Regional High School, will discuss Essex and St. John’s own relationship to slavery in colonial Connecticut as a part of a community effort we are participating in to bring the Witness Stones Project to Essex.
St. John’s – together with the faculty and administrative staff of Valley Regional High School, the Essex Historical Society, the Connecticut River Museum, First Baptist Church, and other civic organizations are collaborating to bring a heightened awareness to our community’s involvement in chattel slavery during the Colonial era. This project is not an exercise in shaming, but rather an important opportunity to help our community know more about its own history.
