JOIN TIM TERNES, DIRECTOR OF THE SAINT JOHN’S BIBLE, FOR A HALF-DAY RETREAT

Saturday, October 1, at 9-2 PM

Make new discoveries as we open ourselves to the illuminated Bible and how it speaks to each of us. Since 2010, Tim Ternes has served as the Director for The Saint John’s Bible, the first completely handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine Abbey in more than 500 years. In his role, Tim Ternes works closely with students and faculty in the history, theology and art departments at the College of Saint Benedict-Saint John’s University, oversees the Bible touring exhibitions, and curates the on-campus exhibition program for the College’s rare book and art collections. He travels extensively throughout the country, offering educational programs for The Saint John’s Bible collection, and we are thrilled that he agreed to lead us in spiritual retreat.

Renew your spirit and expand your understanding as we take a deep dive into The Saint John’s Bible Heritage Edition – Gospel and Acts Volume. During the retreat, Tim will offer examples of the many ways the Holy Spirit inspired Donald Jackson, his team of artists and Saint John’s Abbey to create The Saint John’s Bible. He will share fascinating stories of the theology and history underlying its art and calligraphy. Take time away from your busy schedule to study Scripture, in both word and art form, as we undertake together the ancient practice of Visio Divina. Join in fellowship as we gather together around the Bible, sharing our perspectives and just being with each other.

FROM INSPIRATION TO ILLUMINATION, AN INTRODUCTION TO THE SAINT JOHN’S BIBLE

Sunday, October 2nd, at 9-10 AM | Parish Hall

Tim Ternes is the Director of The Saint John’s Bible at the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library in Collegeville, Minnesota. Tim worked closely with the artistic team in the creation of the original works and facilitated planning and communication between artists and commissioner. This gives him extensive behind-the-scenes knowledge and great stories about all aspects of the project. Tim will introduce guests to the story behind the making of The Saint John’s Bible, and explore the tools, methods, and materials used in the creating the Bible’s original folios. You will be encouraged to stretch your own spiritual imagination as you and Tim explore several illuminations from the project.
